  9. - Can switch between full duplex and half duplex while in conversation.

  37. In order to use Internet Phone, you need...

  40. 1. Windows 3.1 or higher.
  41.  
  42. 2. 8MB of RAM recommended.
  43.  
  44. 3. 486SX 25Mhz or faster recommended.
  45.    For full-duplex conversation, a 486 50MHz is required.
  46.  
  47. 4. Windows compatible audio board, with speaker and microphone.
  48.    For full-duplex conversation, a full-duplex audio card or two different
  49.    audio cards are required, and we recommend, for the full duplex mode, an
  50.    earphone rather than a speaker. See http://www.vocaltec.com for an
  51.    updated list of full duplex cards.

  53. 5. TCP/IP software with WINSOCK 1.1 support.

  55. 6. A SLIP/PPP, or direct Internet connection (14,400 baud minimum).

  61. Installing the Internet Phone
  62. -----------------------------
  63.  
  64. 1. Make sure that your microphone and speaker work properly,
  65.    by recording yourself using the Microsoft's Sound Recorder.
  66.    See "Preparing Your Audio Device" section, below.
  67.  
  68. 2. Create a directory on your hard-disk
  69.     e.g.: MD C:\IPHONE
  70.  
  71. 3. From that directory, execute the self-extracting archive
  72.     C:\IPHONE> IPHONE13.EXE
  73.  
  74. 4. Choose File/Run and execute C:\IPHONE\SETUP
  75.    A new program-manager group file will be created, with icons for The
  76.    Internet Phone and Help file
  77.  
  78. 5. Double-click the Internet Phone icon.
  79.  
  80. 6. The first time you run the Internet Phone Software, a Quick Tour will
  81.    be suggested to you.

  83. 7. Start talking with the rest of the world!

  87. Setting up for Full-Duplex Conversation
  88. ---------------------------------------
  89.  
  90. 1. You must have a full-duplex audio card, or two different normal
  91.    (half-duplex) audio cards in order to use full-duplex mode.
  92.  
  93. 2. Make sure that the modem compression and (possibly) error 
  94.    correction is turned off. See "Modem Settings" below.
  95.  
  96. 3. The Internet Phone will test your system performance and its
  97.    capacity for Full-duplex support on the first time you run
  98.    the new version. If you use two audio cards you will be asked to
  99.    specify which one to use for speaking and which one for listening.
  100.    You can change those settings later in the Options/Preferences dialog. 
  101.  
  102.    Full-duplex mode will not be set if your system does not have a
  103.    full-duplex audio card, or two audio cards.
  104.  
  105. 4. Choose "Full Duplex" from the tool bar or from Options menu.
  106.  
  107. 5. When starting a conversation, the bottom status line will show you
  108.    the connection mode:
  109.  
  110.     - Full Duplex - both sides are using full-duplex mode. Both sides
  111.     can talk and listen at the same time.
  112.  
  113.     - Local FDX - your system is in full-duplex mode, but the remote
  114.     system is only half duplex. The conversation will be half
  115.     duplex, but you will be able to break into your partner's
  116.     speech.
  117.  
  118.     - Remote FDX - your system is set up for half-duplex operation,
  119.     and remote system is set for full-duplex operation.

  121.     - Speak/Listen - Normal half-duplex display.

  125. Problems using Full-Duplex Conversation
  126. ---------------------------------------

  128. The most obvious problem with full-duplex conversation is acoustic
  129. feedback. It is strongly recommended to use full-duplex mode with a headset.
  130. Alternately, try lowering the speaker volume, and put it as far as possible
  131. from the microphone.
  132.  
  133. Improper setting of your full-duplex configuration, might interfere with
  134. your partner's speech: If a half-duplex user is calling you, and your
  135. voice-activation is set too low, every time his speech is heard in the
  136. speaker, it might trigger your system to start transmitting. Since your
  137. partner's system is half-duplex, it will stop speaking and start hearing
  138. what you're transmitting to him - his own speech!

  142. Removing the Internet Phone
  143. ---------------------------

  145. If you installed the Internet Phone, and wish to remove it, or even
  146. just to re-locate it in another directory, then you should do the
  147. following:
  148.  
  149. 1. Load the file WIN.INI into a text editor (e.g. NOTEPAD)
  150.  
  151. 2. Locate the "[Sounds]" section
  152.  
  153. 3. Inside that section, remove all "Internet Phone" sounds.
  154.  
  155. 4. If you then run the Internet Phone again, it will re-install its
  156.    sound files from its new current directory.
  157.  
  158. 5. If you relocate the Internet Phone without removing these entries,
  159.    you'll notice that the indication sounds (busy, ringing, etc) are
  160.    gone.

  165. About The Internet Phone Network
  166. --------------------------------
  167.  
  168. The Internet Phone uses the Internet Phone Servers Network to show 
  169. the currently on-line users. The actual conversation is performed 
  170. directly between the PC's running the Internet Phone, and not via the 
  171. servers.
  172.  
  173. To get the latest list of servers, get the file IRCSRVRS.INI from
  174. the FTP site:
  175.     ftp.vocaltec.com /pub
  176. or from our WEB site
  177.     http://www.vocaltec.com/net.html

  179. and copy it into your local C:\IPHONE directory.

  184. Selecting a Server
  185. ------------------

  187. In order to use the Internet Phone, you must be connected to an Internet
  188. Phone Server, which uses the IRC protocol.
  189.  
  190. When you first run the Internet Phone, You have to choose an Internet Phone
  191. Server from the list of Internet Phone Servers. You can select a different
  192. server anytime you like.
  193.  
  194. It is better to select the server nearest to you. However, there isn't any
  195. difference which server you connect to: All servers hold an updated list
  196. of all Internet Phone users.
  197.  
  198. Once you're connected to the network, you can call any other Internet
  199. Phone user that is connected to the Internet Phone network. There is no
  200. need for both of you to use the same Internet Phone Server.
  201.  
  202. Please note that  by  "nearest"  we  mean  over  the  net,  but  usually
  203. geographically close places have a better network connection.
  204.  
  205. It is possible to connect to IRC servers outside of the Internet Phone
  206. network. In this case, will be able to talk only with Internet Phone
  207. users using the same network.

  214. Before calling VocalTec for technical support, please do the following:

  216. 1. Check the troubleshooting from the Help menu in the Internet Phone.
  217.    It contains a list of problems and solutions.

  219. 2. Look at the technical support page on our Web server:

  222. 3. Select "Technical Support" from the Help menu for information on how
  223.    to contact VocalTec.

  227. Modem Settings
  228. --------------

  230. Modem Settings:

  232. The modem initialization string should be changed to allow faster transfer:
  233.  
  234. 1. You should add the characters "%C0\N1" to the string to disable data 
  235.    compression and error corrections. 
  236.    It is possible that different modems will use different AT commands.
  237.    If your modem does not response correctly to the above commands
  238.    you should look for the AT command table in your modem documentation
  239.    for the right commands.
  240.    
  241. 2. To edit the initialization string in Netmanage Chameleon you can
  242.    enter setup/modem/initialize and add the above characters to the string.
  243.  
  244. 3. In Trumpet you can edit your "login.cmd" script. Look for the line:
  245.    "$modemsetup = "&C1..." and add the above characters to the string.
  246.  
  247. 4. If you are using some other TCP/IP software as your Internet connection, 
  248.    Try to find out the way to edit the modem initialization string.
